Jewelry Repair Laser Welding: Re-Shanking a Ring

Tips for Re-Shanking a Ring Using Laser Welding

Start by sizing the ring on a mandrel. When this is done, record the size for future reference. Make sure the shoulders do not have burrs.

Now determine the gauge and weight of the stock wire for the new replacement shank by using your calipers to measure the shoulders of the ring where the shank begins to thin. Remember to add about 0.2mm on both the thickness and width for sanding and polishing purposes.

Cut the old shank off.

Make sure the shoulders do not have burrs.

Anneal the stock wire according to the color, karat, and weight you are using. Shape the ring with ring-shaping pliers, and bend the stock wire into a basic ring shape to the appropriate size. The ring should fit snug into the new shank.

File both sides of the new shank and both sides of the ring to ensure a proper joint. At this time the proper joint preparation must be chosen.

Butt the two pieces together inside the laser welding chamber of the LaserStar welding system and tack weld where the ring and the new shank meet. Place two tack welds, one laser weld on each side. Check to see if the weld joint is straight and flush.

Note: If the joint is not straight, break the welds, dress both ends and repeat the process from the beginning.

If the tack weld is satisfactory, laser weld all the way around both sides of the shank.

Clean up the area by filing, sanding or using a rubber wheel. Polish and clean accordingly.

“I love my LaserStar Laser Welding Machine. Not only has it increased my daily production but also the quality of some jewelry repairs. By allowing me to size one extra ring a day, it pays for itself.”
